Nichols John Holmes erected a church building on the corner of Briggs Avenue and Buncombe Street in 190+. This church was named Tabernacle Presbyterian Church. The congregation that grew around this was organized in 1910 and affiliated with the Brewerton Presbyterian Church. It subsequently became known as Tabernacle Pentecostal Church.
Rev. N.J. Holmes as founder and pastor held the conviction that this church, in connection with the college he also founded (Holmes Bible College), could best carry on its work as an interdenominational institution without formal ties to any other established denomination.
The church was guided under the leadership of Rev. N.J. Holmes until his death in 1919. Dr. Paul F. Beacham, the second pastor served from 1919 until his death in 1978. At the time of Rev. N.J. Holmes’ death the church became known as Holmes Memorial Tabernacle Pentecostal Church, as present (Holmes Memorial Church for short).
This great and historical church which has been in continuous operation since its founding was duly chartered under the laws of the State of South Carolina.
